The NCAA Tournament is hitting its final stages and only one Rhode Island team is currently still in contention for a National Title. With USASL soccer over the year and all other team’s eliminated, here’s what to look forward to this week in Ocean State soccer.
Friars Survive & Advance
The Providence Friars advanced to the College Cup Sweet 16 with an upset victory on the road in Happy Valley. Providence took down 15th-seeded Penn State in overtime, 3-2, for its second win in tournament play.
The Friars trailed, 2-0, in the second half before rattling off three unanswered goals including the winner five minutes into the extra frame. Medway, Massachusetts native and Boston College graduate transfer Trevor Davock did the honors, firing home the winner off the woodwork. He also assisted on the Friars two goals in regulation.

Providences faces second-ranked Clemson in the Round of 16 on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Upcoming Men’s Soccer ID Clinics Announced
The Friars also announced they would be holding a Winter ID Clinic the weekend of January 11-12 to allow high-school student-athletes the chance at getting seen by Providence staff while getting an inside look at being part of the program.
Bryant will also be hosting an ID clinic on December 21st.
Brown Women Fall in Second Round
The Lady Bears were the state’s lone team to qualify for the D-I NCAA Tournament but fell in the second round to second-seeded Florida State, 2-0, in Tallahassee. It was a strong season for Brown, who finished 14-2-3 and won the Ivy League title.
