The NCAA Tournament is hitting its final stages and only one Rhode Island team is currently still in contention for a National Title. With USASL soccer over the year and all other team’s eliminated, here’s what to look forward to this week in Ocean State soccer.


Friars Survive & Advance

The Providence Friars advanced to the College Cup Sweet 16 with an upset victory on the road in Happy Valley. Providence took down 15th-seeded Penn State in overtime, 3-2, for its second win in tournament play.

The Friars trailed, 2-0, in the second half before rattling off three unanswered goals including the winner five minutes into the extra frame. Medway, Massachusetts native and Boston College graduate transfer Trevor Davock did the honors, firing home the winner off the woodwork. He also assisted on the Friars two goals in regulation.

Providences faces second-ranked Clemson in the Round of 16 on Sunday at 6 p.m.


Upcoming Men’s Soccer ID Clinics Announced

The Friars also announced they would be holding a Winter ID Clinic the weekend of January 11-12 to allow high-school student-athletes the chance at getting seen by Providence staff while getting an inside look at being part of the program.

Bryant will also be hosting an ID clinic on December 21st.


Brown Women Fall in Second Round

The Lady Bears were the state’s lone team to qualify for the D-I NCAA Tournament but fell in the second round to second-seeded Florida State, 2-0, in Tallahassee. It was a strong season for Brown, who finished 14-2-3 and won the Ivy League title.

Local Roundup: Week of November 17-23

It’s playoff time in NCAA soccer as the Division I Men’s tournament bracket was released this week, featuring a pair of Rhode Island teams along with many more across New England. While those teams are getting set for tournament play, Rhode Island’s D-III teams already opened tournament play over the weekend, with mixed results all around. As for the amateur scene, the Rhode Island Cup was played on Sunday morning and a champion was crowned.


USASL

It was a championship weekend for one local Rhode Island team. Providence City FC claimed the USASL crown with a victory over RI Arsenal Gunners at Tuckertown Park on Sunday morning. The second-seeded Rogues narrowly edged the top-seeded Gunners, 3-2.

It’s the second trophy of 2019 for the Rogues, who captured the BSSL Division 1 title over the summer.


NCAA D-I Men’s Bracket Announced

The University of Rhode Island and Providence College will both be represented in the NCAA D-I Men’s College Cup field.

Providence, which suffered a 3-1 loss to third-ranked Georgetown in the Big East Championship, drew a home match on Thursday at 7 p.m. and will host Atlantic Sun champion, New Jersey Institute of Technology. NJIT (10-4-4) earned the top-seed in the ASun Tournament and knocked off Florida Gulf Coast in the final, 2-1. It’s the first-ever meeting between the two teams and it will be played at Chapey Field in Providence.

As for URI, they captured the Atlantic 10 Tournament title with a 1-0 win over Dayton after a win over host Fordham in the semifinals, prevailing in a nine-round shootout. The Rams will travel to face Syracuse (7-6-5) out of the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. Syracuse lost to fourth-ranked Virginia in the ACC Quarterfinals and will have 11 days in between games. That match will also be played on Thursday at 7 p.m. and will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.


NCAA D-I Women’s Tournament

Rhode Island’s lone representative, the Lady Bears of Brown, stayed alive with a shootout victory over Monmouth at home on Saturday. Brown advanced to the next round where they will travel to face the region’s top-seed Florida State (16-5) on Friday in Tallahassee, Florida at 5 p.m., the first meeting in history between the teams.


NCAA D-III Women’s Tournament

The lone Ocean State school in the tournament, Johnson & Wales, lost 3-0 in the tournament opener to MIT.


NCAA D-III Men’s Tournament

Both R.I. representatives, Johnson & Wales and Salve Regina, fell in their first-round matches. The Wildcats lost to Middlebury, 2-0, while the Seahawks dropped a shootout to Rowan.

Local Roundup: Weekend of November 14-16

With the fall season beginning to wind down, the end of soccer in New England is approaching as we head into the winter months. But for now, the NCAA Tournament is about to get into full swing with college soccer reaching its peak.

Several Rhode Island teams will be participating in postseason play this year on both the men’s and women’s sides. Here’s what to look out for this weekend.


NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer

There’s a few men’s teams still in action as the NCAA Tournament approaches.

Brown (3-9-4) will not qualify for the tournament but will host Dartmouth in their regular-season finale on Saturday at 4 p.m. immediately following the Lady Bears’ postseason opener.

Bryant finished the regular season at 8-7-0 and enters the Northeast Conference tournament as the third-seed. They will take on second-seeded Long Island University on Friday morning in their postseason opener.

Providence (14-5-0) pulled a shocker in the Big East Semifinal upsetting fourteenth-ranked St. John’s for the second time this season, 2-1. They’ll take on third-ranked Georgetown in the Big East Championship on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Washington, D.C.

Lastly, Rhode Island (13-3-2) enters the weekend as a semifinalist in the Atlantic 10 tournament. They’ll take on Fordham Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. to earn a berth in Sunday’s title game.


NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer

Brown was the lone women’s program in Rhode Island to make the NCAA Tournament with an Ivy League title. The Bears (14-1-2) host Monmouth in the first round on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Providence.


NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer

The NCAA Tournament begins on Saturday with a pair of Ocean State programs receiving bids this season.

Salve Regina (14-4-3) will hit the road and play Rowan (N.J.) University in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Seahawks won the CCC Conference Tournament to earn an automatic bid, defeating Endicott in a double-overtime thriller. Salve Regina’s tournament opener is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Johnson & Wales (17-2-2) joins Salve in the tournament after winning the GNAC Conference Tournament title over St. Joseph’s (Maine) in double-overtime. They will head to Troy, New York to take on Middlebury on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.


NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer

Johnson & Wales (16-6-0) was the only women’s program in Rhode Island to earn a D-III tournament berth. They’ll take on top-seed MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday at 11 a.m. after also beating St. Joseph’s (Maine) in the GNAC Tournament title game, 2-1.


USASL Championship Game

The Rogues close out their USASL campaign in the league championship game against top-seeded RI Arsenal Gunners of Warwick on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with a fixture at Tuckertown Park in South Kingstown.
